I believe your assessment is pretty much on point. I don’t have the extensive
background in this topic that many in this group probably have, but the use of
neuroscience as an inspiration for AI has, I think, been covered pretty
extensively (“How to Create a Mind” by Ray Kurzweil, “On Intelligence” by Jeff
Hawkins, and at least chapters 9 and 10 of “AGI Revolution” by Ben Goertzel, to
name just a few that I have on-hand).
The value of this article by Hassabis, to me from the standpoint of a more
limited AI background and knowledgebase, is the high level overview nature of
it, including the extensive “references” section which seems to have a pretty
good list of sources to look to for reading about various relevant topics.

It's sort of a high level inspirational paper... it does lay down pretty
clearly what sort of thinking and approach Deep Mind is likely to be taking in
the next years ... there are no big surprises here though as this has been
Demis's approach, bias and interest all along, right?

Attached is a PDF version of an interesting article from Demis Hassabis – the
founder of DeepMind – about using neuroscience to inspire the creation of
Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
