I agree that software running on a computer is not the same as mental awareness associated with a human/brain
 
However I think that:
 
Software running on a computer is analogous to electrochemical dynamics occurring in the human brain
 
Mental awareness associated with a software program, is analogous to mental awareness associated with brain-dynamics
 
I am not reductionist: I don't reduce a human mind completely to the human brain, nor a computer mind completely to a software program.  I do think there is some added element of "awareness" that is associated with physically implemented minds, in a way i don't fully understand.  But I don't think I need to understand this in order to create a digital mind.
