Hi Jonathan, I think Sim City and many of the Sim games would be good but Civilization 3 and Alpha Centauri and Black & White are highly competitive and allow huge scope for being combative.
Compared to earlier versions, Civilisation 3 has added more options for non-war based domination but unless players are committed to a peaceful approach the program is largely a war game.
