Daniel,
The US military funds a lot of AI research that is not directly
weapons-related, for example work on natural language understanding, network
security, integration of heterogenous data, antibiowarfare, etc. etc. etc.
So I think there are real opportunities for AGI-related funding from the
military, that do not involve severely morally questionable things like
creating AGI-powered weapons. Of course, those who choose to pursue such
avenues must handle them with extreme care.
One interesting point is that the US gov't rarely wishes to exclusively own
technologies; they are generally happy to fund their development in exchange
for a license to use them.
