I think Yudkowsky once said that AI remains at present largely the dominion of pioneers and mavericks. It's certainly not yet a mature science. The typical pattern which I've observed on AI forums and lists over the last 15 years goes something like the following: 1. The Hopes of Visionaries 2. Elucidation of the issues 3. The Dominion of Philosophers 4. Plebiscite Immigration 5. The Troll 6. Exodus of the Visionaries And Serious Thinkers (EVAST) 7. Insults and Idiocy 8.
