It's really nice to be appreciated . . . . :-)
but, everyone needs to work at making this list a good place.
A few suggestions:
1.. Don't feed the trolls - Please don't reply to (or even notice) Mike
Tintner or Mentifex/Murray
2.. Don't be amazed at your own brilliance 1 - If you think that no one is
investigating an obvious sub-topic, either you are badly mistaken or there is a
good reason why it's not being investigated. If you think that I'm wrong about
this, just investigate the topic until you come up with something truly useful
and *then* crow about it.
3.. Don't be amazed at your own brilliance 2 - If you're *positive* that
someone is totally wrong about something but you can't tell us exactly what the
shortcoming is or what to do about it, then *you* are wrong.
4.. RTFL 1 == Read the background literature - No, this does not mean scan it
for phrases that support your bigotry. It means read it and understand it down
to the bottom. It also means try to stay somewhat current. Matt Mahoney --
you've fossilized, dude.
5.. RTFL 2 == Read Some Current Literature - If you don't know what to read,
I'm currently recommending the most recent books by Hauser, Pinker, Tomasello,
Minsky, and Hofstadter as good starting points. Then, start reading some real
research papers.
6.. Stop with the "it can't be done" BS - If you truly believe that, just go
away and stop bothering us.
7.. Learn something new - Go out and learn F#. Check out the NLTK. Look at
all the AGI-like things that people are doing with Wikipedia.
8.. Don't re-invent the wheel - Look at all the things that people are doing
with Wikipedia. Notice what does and doesn't work. Don't do the same thing
that everyone is trying to do and expect different results.
9.. Don't believe that your opinions are facts. Only my opinions count and
they're worth exactly the value of the electrons that convey them.
This mailing list is fossilizing at a rapid rate as everyone is convinced that
they are right and shouting past each other -- convinced that their opinions
are fact.
I'd appreciate it if people went out and actually did some work or research and
came back with something useful (like Stephen Reed). But please, don't try to
snow us with fake work (YKY).
Anyone who has done 5 and 7 should contact me off-list.
Mark
