because this is fundamentally a religious issue. Consciousness brings with it a certain linearity of thought process along with a certain lack of rigor. However, we don't want to even think about "thought" processes that may be vastly superior to our own, and which may not even involve consciousness. God and Santa Clause are believed at once to think like us, yet be able to do things (like simultaneously tracking everyone in the world's activities) that are fundamentally incompatible with our own thought processes. EVERYONE is religiously programmed to some extent, and IMHO this is creeping into AGI discussions here. I had little clue about this until I got a project in Saudi Arabia, where they have a somewhat different collective programming. Not only did I have to learn their programming, but I also had to learn to recognize some of my own. I suspect that the two goals of conscious computing and super intelligence are mutually incompatible.
