Consciousness opens a major can of worms and has religious issues. And a God
could be an emergence from the complex system of distributed consciousness
of multi-agent intelligent lifeforms (figure I'd throw that out there).

But avoiding consciousness and keeping intelligent agents unawares of
themselves avoids all that extra bullsh*t. And certainly there are many uses
for engineered conscious entities . but maximizing both consciousness and
intelligence in an agent may be unnecessarily complicated to build.

When you get into strict definitions people get alienated...

because this is fundamentally a religious issue. Consciousness brings with
it a certain linearity of thought process along with a certain lack of
rigor. However, we don't want to even think about "thought" processes that
may be vastly superior to our own, and which may not even involve
consciousness. God and Santa Clause are believed at once to think like us,
yet be able to do things (like simultaneously tracking everyone in the
world's activities) that are fundamentally incompatible with our own thought
processes.

EVERYONE is religiously programmed to some extent, and IMHO this is creeping
into AGI discussions here. I had little clue about this until I got a
project in Saudi Arabia, where they have a somewhat different collective
programming. Not only did I have to learn their programming, but I also had
to learn to recognize some of my own. I suspect that the two goals of
conscious computing and super intelligence are mutually incompatible.
