I can't say where you are going wrong because I really have no idea. However, my guess is that you are ignoring certain contingencies that would be necessary to make your claims valid. I tried to use a reference to the theory of limits to explain this but it seemed to fall on deaf ears.
If I were to write everything I knew about Bernoulli without looking it up, it would be a page of few facts. I have read some things about him, I just don't recall much of it. So when I dare say that Abram couldn't write much about Cauchy without looking it up, it is not a pretentious put down, but more like a last-ditch effort to teach him some basic humility.
