I remembered reading about it on this list so that was the first thing I checked, but thanks for the suggestion. I tried to set another default type such as Story and whatnot but to no avail. The only thing I haven't tried is to tinker with ticket type ordering to see if the field would always reset to 'Bug' or the first type in the list.
Anyway, with the new instance the problem is gone.
