Without giving specific instructions, I think it would be a great idea to mention that a configuration of the virtual machine is probably needed to access the network provided my the host machine and that may involve opening some ports in a firewall. The problem I had was that I was not used to VM and I was used of things that just work. I mean there is usually no configuration needed for a web browser to work. So, I felt I had something to do but I did not know what.
I think this is analogous to a version control system like Subversion or Mercurial. This idea is not very complicated but people not used to it usually need some time to really get it.
