As far as I was aware, the iodine bound in non-ionic iv contrast has different reactive properties to the iodine found in shellfish. I was under the impression that a shellfish allergy was not necessarily as precurser to an iodinated iv contrast allergy. We injected a patient a few days ago that had an allergy to topical iodine. She is still fine and came back in a few days later with no ill Sender: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Precedence: bulk Reply-To: AIRNEWS<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

While the patient was still intubated the patient came down for a abdo/pelvis CT and was injected with 100 mls of non-ionic contrast (the ICU staff failed to tell radiology about the previuos reaction and had not documented it in the notes.....oops). The patient showed no indication of rection to that injection and recieved another a week later. I personally would be hesitant injecting anyone with any previous known allergy to any type of iodine unless absolutely necessary and would take the precaution of predosing with antihistamines ie prednisolone and the day before and hydrocortisone on the day of examination. Bring on cheaper Gadolinium so we can use that as an alternative.
