If you simply checkout jakarta-avalon-excalibur and try to build the docs target, it will fail (with or without gump). The problem is hardcoded relative paths in each of the excalibur subproject targets. This has nothing to do with the gump descriptor. See:

The plan was to move all these descriptors to a place where *everybody* could update them.
