The automatic smart chargers (this includes the trickle chargers and
tenders) don't always work on a competely dead battery.
A battery that is totally dead looks like an 'open' circuit (batteries
are complex in that they have an internal resistance) to these
chargers. Therefore, the charger does not recognize that it is
connected, or may realize it is connected a d not charge because it
does not think it is correctly connected.
The tenders and smart chargers do work great for maintaining batteries
in cars that are not used often or during long term storage though.

I will have to agree with others, the battery is likely toast.
If you buy one of those reconditioning chargers I mentioned
previously, the
battery can probably be salvaged. But no guarantees about that. What
I DO
KNOW is that if you use one of those reconditioners on a battery
that is
going to be stored, it will preserve the battery. They are also good
for
revitalizing batteries that have been abused (e.g., the lights left
on until
the battery is drained... Not that any of us have ever done that :P).
I probably should mention that I have no interest in any companies
mentioned. Just a satisfied customer.
Also, get all the gas out. With a Bosch Spider, you might
consider walking the wild side and letting the car do the
draining for you, though...
