Hey Guys,

There may be a ground wire in the boot that sometimes come loose or get
corroded.
My81 Fiat Spider with L-Jetronic mysteriously died one day. It took days to
figure out.
Don't know if the wire is in the same locatin on Alfas

And Jeff responded:

That hasn't been my experience with the L-Jetronic system on my GTV6. On my
car, the pump runs when the starter is energized, and when the ignition is on
and the flap of the airflow meter is opened. It never runs when the engine is
stopped and the key is simply turned to the "on" position. Based on Tess'
description, it sounds to me like her pump is running with the starter
energized, and then stopping when she releases the key. I don't have a Spider
wiring diagram here, but it might be productive to check and see if the pump is
powered by two separate, fused circuits; two separate switching circuits to the
relay (one from the starter switch, one from the ECU); and how the fuel pump
inertial switch is wired in (it could be tripped). I've heard many times that
the Spider doesn't use the massflow-based switch to turn on the pump, and
instead uses the flywheel sensors. So the sensors could also be a culprit.

Tess, I'd suggest this test: have a friend connect a 12-volt test light to the
power terminals of the fuel pump, then have him/her watch as you crank the
engine. The light should come on with cranking and stay on until the engine
comes to a stop. If the light comes on with cranking and then goes off as soon
as the starter stops, there is a problem in some part of the circuitry that
I've mentioned.
