Ira, I know you are in Israel. The pretext of the "clunkers" program was
to improve fuel economy and thus reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Plus
it was to try and sell some cars for the auto industry.
The bigger the difference between the fuel mileage of the traded in
vehicle and the vehicle purchased, the more money you got. Actually, the
amounts were $3500 or $4500. I never did figure out if that was in addition
to a trade in value for the old vehicle, but I do not think so since the
vehicles were "destroyed."
It was a farce in many ways. Lots of big trucks were traded for new big
trucks that got only slightly better fuel economy. The most commonly traded
in passenger vehicle was the Ford Explorer.
And apparently, many if not most of the vehicles would have been traded
in anyway. This program just accelerated the sales slightly.
I heard on NPR or National Public Radio this morning that the national
debt has gone up over a trillion dollars since O'Bama was elected.
