Will- Something is wrong. I've gotten as much as 30-something MPG out
of my 164, and it routinely gets in the high 20's. Could be lots of
things, but I'd start with a new O2 sensor. Is the temp coming up to
where it should be (about half way)? If not, you probably need a new
thermostat.
Brad -
Someone else just brought up the thermostat thing. My car is coming up
to temperature, but staying at the cool end*, and the fan comes on down
around 165: instead of 180: as the Milano's does. My mechanic's mechanic
- that is, the man who does most of the work, not the old Alfa guy -
seems to think this is a good thing, but I'm beginning to wonder. I'm
also getting a cooling-system warning intermittently on the dash panel,
which I'd assumed would be related to overheating; never occurred to me
it might also indicate insufficient heat, since heat in general (as in
engine-compartment temperatures) is the chief bane of these cars' existence.
Thanks for your input. Glad we have this forum!

* ca. 175:. I've not been concerned about this, as my old Berlina never
ever went over that except when the fanbelt broke
