All the items you mention are powered by the ignition switch. Sounds
like you have an intermittent connection somewhere, maybe in the ignition
switch itself. When the engine is running the vibration completes the
connection.
Disconnect as many wiring plugs as you can. Clean them with
CRC electrical cleaner or just plug them back together. Tighten all nut
connections in the wiring.
The ignition switch itself plugs in right
above the driver's knee. There are three wires in the plug. One will be hot,
one runs to the starter solenoid and one runs to the ignition and all other
electrical items.
Use a volt ohm meter to check which is the hot. Then
jump from the the hot to each of the other terminals in turn. The one that
activates the starer is the starter (duh!). Run a jumper from hot to the
terminal that is not the starter and temporarily jump to the other terminal to
start the car. If it runs and everything is fine, the problem is the ignition
switch.
If the problem is not the ignition switch, you could run a
jumper from the battery cable on the starter to a toggle switch to the red
wire terminal on the driver side of the engine compartment. It should be
covered with a square black cover. The wires from the Alternator run there
and all electricity is distributed from there.
Basically you are
eliminating possible sources of the poor circuit.
And as suggested,
clean and tighten every the ground wire you can find, starting with the half
dozen or so black wires at the rear of the intake manifold.
Ciao,
Russ Neely

Subject: [alfa] Electrical Issues with 84 Spider --help
needed
Hello Digesti,
I am having an electrical issue with my bosch injected
84 Spider Veloce.
Suddenly my electrical tach works intermittently (when it
does it bounces up
and down). When I start the car it doesn9t work at all, but
does seem to
spring to life when driving.
Other items that don9t work now
include: the heater blower (and warning
light), the digital clock, fuel and
oil pressure gauges, low beam warning
light. The red alternator light is on.
The alternator itself was recently
rebuilt and the battery is charging. I
tested with a voltmeter. I also
checked all the fuses which seem to be in good
order and are tightly
connected. The car is working fine otherwise, and there
are no issues with
drivability.
Thoughts as to what could be causing this
wide-spread failure? And how I can
fix it?
Thanks
Jon
