I just got the instructions for removing the ignition switch from my 1986 Spider. (Thank you, Eric.) According to the procedure, the key must be in the 'on' position to unlock the column before the lock assembly can be removed. The problem is that the key will not turn in the cylinder. Does anyone know what would happen if I applied a big slide hammer to the keyway and removed the cylinder by main force? (or is there a less brutish way to do the job?)
I wouldn't hit things with a hammer. The steering column seems to be made of softer metal, I think you'll break it while getting the switch out. I don't recall even having the key in the switch the last time I removed one. Have you removed the nut and bolt holding the switch in place? Take them out, then try working the switch out, you might have to move the wheel a little bit, but I think it should come out. bs -- to be removed from alfa, see http://www.digest.net/bin/digest-subs.cgi or email "unsubscribe alfa" to [email protected]
