I used spray trim adhesive last time around, just sprayed it carefully
around the door frames where the plastic would attach.

     Double stick tape will work fine.  It is available at any auto parts
store and most any home / hardware store.  It is behind the door panel
anyway.
     I used that to attached the front edge of the rear spoiler on my 84
spider.   The only problem is the tape I found is white.

The grey/black gooey stuff sure sounds
like 3M's flexible strip caulk (
http://www.eastwood.com/3m-flexible-strip-caulk-20-yd.html).  You can get it
at most auto parts places as well.
