This is a major job but one that can be done by a good "shade tree" mechanic with the right tools.

I have done this three times and learned work arounds/short cuts each time. Foremost is that the transmission does not have to be completely removed to R/R the clutch/plate. An overhead engine hoist is of great help. Detaching the rear bank exhaust manifold is a PITA but necessary.

Major caution: The "S" clutch is different from conventional design. It is of the "pull" release type not the push type and requires some maneuvering when installing and removing). Understanding how this works will avoid many headaches.

Get the shop manual if you can and also check the 164 discussions site and Alfa BB for step-by-step posts. As with all such undertakings.

Good luck

Yes, with 102K on my '91, it's time for the change, major slippage in all
gears so it's not the slave cylinder. Anyone out there done the job
themselves? Is it difficult? What are the special tools, and essential
tools?

Grazie Mille
