I lost the post with the original question. A couple of thoughts to add: 1) Is the hose thoroughly deteriorated and/or cracked? If the filler neck on the tank rusted at all? If the filler neck is grungy, then you certainly want to sand it nice and smooth and paint it before putting a new hose on.
2) I seem to remember that section of hose not being very long. Take it to an auto part store and see if you can find a stepped down hose of the proper diameters on both sides. Then hopefully it's as simple as cutting it off the proper distance on either side of the step down. 3) If the hose is long enough, then two sections of hose of the proper diameters and a muffler pipe stepped down (with four hose clamps), as I think somebody else suggested, might do the trick.
