If you get the warning lights (for brake and brake level both red) when
depressing the brake pedal, a likely problem is the brake switch relay. Is
is located in the engine bay behind the false firewall near where the main
wiring harness comes through. It is a standard five prong relay used in the
A/C circuit for many American cars. I have had this happen on each of three
164s owned. Last time I took the relay to my local Advance Auto and they
matched it - no, not in their parts list but an experience salesman
recognized the similarity. He disappeared in the parts rack and emerged a
few minutes later with the matching "A/C" relay.
Hope this helps,
Don

Subject: [alfa] 164 brake lights
My parents just called to say the brake lights on their '95 164 LS have
stopped working. (The bulbs that are also used as turn signals still
function in that capacity.) Are there wiring diagrams available for
download anywhere? I talked my dad through measuring resistance across the
switch, and apparently it's normally closed, and then breaks the circuit
when the brake pedal is released. (Is that normal among modern cars?) So
it seems like the switch works, but there's no voltage being applied to it.
(The fuse is fine.) Is this a common problem?
Thanks,
Joe
The brake lights once went out on our lamented 94 164 LS. I was surprised
they went out on both sides at the same time. It turns out the culprit
was a bulb had burned out in the 3rd brake light, and replacing that bulb
miraculously fixed the outboard lights. I am no expert, but if that's the
way
I had wired it, I would not put it into a wiring diagram for all the world
to see. Have one of your folks step on the brake while the other checks
the 3rd light to see what it's doing.
Good luck!
