I don't want you to think I am just grabbing advice and not responding to anyone. For some reason I am only getting about 1 in 3 digests. I am piecing everyone's reply's together and will try to respond to all of them.
I must say that I too was surprised the spindle was not drilled. It has been cleaned; I chased the threads and probed it with a steel pick and there really is no hole. Also, I would not use a nylok nut. I have contemplated a half height nut for a lock nut. However, the cotter pin lock is just so simple.... I am leaning toward either pulling and drilling mine or purchasing a used one I believe is available locally. Thanks all.
