I don't want you to think I am just grabbing advice and not responding 
to anyone.  For some reason I am only getting about 1 in 3 digests.  I 
am piecing everyone's reply's together and will try to respond to all of 
them.

I must say that I too was surprised the spindle was not drilled.  It has 
been cleaned; I chased the threads and probed it with a steel pick and 
there really is no hole.

Also, I would not use a nylok nut.  I have contemplated a half height 
nut for a lock nut.  However, the cotter pin lock is just so simple....

I am leaning toward either pulling and drilling mine or purchasing a 
used one I believe is available locally.
