Bruce, if the mirror is still on, look to see if the mirror is way over to one
side, which also includes top and bottom. If this is the case - and please
don't hold me responsible - push 'down' on the mirror in the opposite
direction of the low side. It actually might take a fairly good push, but
hearing a clicking sound is good. If you can operate the toggle switch to have
the mirror move in the direction you are pushing, that is ideal.

I've found that the mirror, when moved to far to one side - either with the
switch or someone pushing on it (who shouldn't have) - the plastic gears are
at the end of where the two gears can sync. I've gone through the process
several times with no problems, but this doesn't say that the plastic gears
aren't brittle, so be prepared.

If the mirror is off, it is almost impossible to install it back on the motor
housing without forcing the gears since that procedure requires a lot of
pushing.
