Cats: I think this last piece of info tells me it really is the switch. In the # 2 position, I have headlights but no tail lights. If I pull back on the stalk gently toward me, I get the tail lights back. The switch must be losing its contact for the tail lights (yellow wires) when it goes into the head light position.
I suppose after a good cleaning, I might see someplace I can bend a little for some added contact pressure. I am still looking into the late stalk switches that I have. They are brand new. Actually, I looked at the wiring for my 79 Alfetta and I can identify every wire from the stalk (almost - the later ones have intermittent wipers and 74 doesn't). I just need to find out if it will fit on the steering column.
