When discussing octane one needs keep in mind there are many methods of measuring octane & they all give slightly different numbers to the same quality gasoline.

The common method of measuring octane in Europe is RON (Research Octane Number). In the USA we use the PON (Pump Octane Number). RON 91 is about PON 87. Thus many Alfa owners in the USA read their owners manual, see the advice to use 91 octane, and assume they need to use 'high octane' gas. But if the owner's manual is advising 91 RON then PON 87 meets that requirement.
