Since you say the headlights worked but not other ignition switch controlled
items it seems like it must either be a failing ignition switch or a fault
at the fuse box's switched circuits.
Since the ignition switch is neither easy or cheap to replace the frugal me
would start by checking the fuse box very closely. On our '84 Spider it is
fairly easy to unhook the fuse box, remove its rear panel and check all the
wire harness connectors plugged in to the back side. (Not sure about your
'87 Spider - I suspect the knee bolsters will be somewhat in the way but it
should still be do-able - and worth doing). While you are at it I'd suggest
replacing all the fuses. Although the blade type fuses are quite reliable
they could be 25 years old - even the frugal me figures you got your monies
worth out of them. Put some new good quality fuses in to eliminate them as a
potential weakness.

Subject: [alfa] Spyder Engine quit
Fellow Alfisti:
The Alfa in question is an 87 Spyder Quad.
A few times over the past 3 or 4 weeks, while motoring on down the road,
it
has, shall I say, "hiccupped"? - engine quit for a beat then immediately
restarted. All the idiot lights would be on for a few seconds, just as if
it were started from completely off. Kinda hard to troubleshoot when
later
all runs ok.
But while driving this morning, it quit. Engine just stopped. I was able
to
coast to a spot in a parking lot (fortunately, I was only a half-mile from
home). Turned key off then on - nothing at all - no idiot lights, no
starter. Headlights work, so there are electrons somewhere, but the
electric windows do not work. Any thoughts as to what to check? Some
relay? Which one, where is it?
