Where would I find a reliable replacement? Or is there a fix?

At least for a 101 series car with a Bosch starter, a 12 V. Bosch solenoid listed for a generic VW bug--at a generic parts store, such as NAPA, was a perfect interchange for the solenoid on a Bosch starter on an Alfa. I'd lay even money that a Bosch solenoid listed for a Volvo would fit, as well. Can't say for sure with a '74 Alfa, but it might well be worth checking out.
