Hello JM and list: Okay...I found the file and can actually play it, so I copied it back over to where I saved it (on the external drive) good so far, right? No...not exactly! I go into MP3 Direct Cut, but when I look for the file in there to do what I need to do to it, no soap, for when I type in the file name and I get to the part where it says 11-22 (that's when the file is dated) anyhow as soon as I start to type "22"..no, no, no...it dings me (or makes that sound that says, uh uh, you can't do that; in short, the file is not showing up in MP3 Direct Cut! I dare not restart my computer as I can't remember _exactly_ where I found that file (think it was in like a "back-up, but why can I not make MP3 Direct Cut understand that it is there? As it is now, I can play the file, but cannot make the edits I want to make! What do I do now? Tom Kaufman

Hey Tom. So were you doing file operations on the copy on the external drive, or did you have anotehr copy of the file you were working on, presumably in your c: or some other internal drive? Because if the latter, it'll still be on the external and Mp3 Direct Cut would not have touched that copy. If you exited, the prompt was probably asking if you were sure you wanted to exit without saving or something like that. BTW if you want to search an entire drive for something, go to that drive letter, as in, the root folder, after you press enter on the drive letter. Press f3 and you'll be in a search box. Type in whatever letters you think correspond and wait for the list to populate. It may take a while. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> On Behalf Of Tom Kaufman via groups.io Sent: November 24, 2025 12:40 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [all-audio] Can Lost Music Files Be Restored? Hello JM Casey: I've tried searching for it in Windows, by just hitting that Windows key; then putting in the name of the file...no soap! I thought maybe there may be a way to search MP3 Direct Cut (as far as I know, I _did not_ delete that file myself) now MP3 Direct Cut may had done it; what _might have happened_: I was in the middle of saving something, but thought "wait a minute; I think I'm about to mess up here!", so I attempted to exit out of MP3 Direct file, but upon doing that, I got the message about "are you sure you want to..." then I don't remember what it said now, but I clicked "yes"; was then when I reopened MP3 Direct Cut that I could not find the file in there! However, at this point, it was still in the place where I kept it, so once I restarted the computer in hopes it would re-appear in MP3 Direct Cut, but it not only didn't re-appear in MP3 Direct Cut, it didn't appear where I had it on the hard drive (external hard drive) either! Hey Tom. If iDo you think you deleted it by accident? If it's not in the recycle bin and was deleted by accident, say if your system is set not to use the recycle bin or you used shift-delete, which I think just marks a file's space as being usable, effectively deleting it, then you would need some kind of file recovery software to get it back. Those do exist and they should work if you haven't overwritten the data. Although I was looking into ones to use a while ago I never did end up trying any because none of them were really capable fo doing what I wanted, which was basically recovering an entire file system, at least not for free, and I didn't want to take the chance of the programme being basically unusable. But to recover a single file, there are usually trials you can download and attempt. However before any of that, have you tried searching the entire drive fo the filename or something approximating the filename, to see if it ended up in a different folder you weren't planning on putting it in? -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> On Behalf Of Tom Kaufman via groups.io Sent: November 24, 2025 12:06 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [all-audio] Can Lost Music Files Be Restored? Hello list: I actually posted a similar question last night as I somehow have lost a music file; I had tried to use Restore to hopefully bring it back, but was told later that all that "Restore" will do is bring back programs, documents and such! Somehow (am not really sure how) but I lost a music file while editing this file in MP3 Direct Cut! For those that didn't see my post of last night, at first, I could still access the file on my computer (more like my external hard drive) but could not see it in MP3 Direct Cut; it was like as far as MP3 Direct Cut was concerned, this file didn't exist! I decided to restart the computer (a windows 10 machine) it was then I discovered that I no longer could see that file in the place where it had been before, so am trying to determine if it is buried somewhere or if it's just _gone_ and there is absolutely _no way_ to bring it back (which I hope is not the case because, I don't know if I can find anyone who has a recording of this particular thing that is on this file, so if anyone can suggest things I could try to see if that file is still on that external hard drive somewhere! I have tried searches in Windows (to no avail) I do have another program I could try, but I sort of doubt that it'll tell me anything either, so if someone can come up with things I might try that'll help me locate and access this file, that would be greatly appreciated!
