soffice.bin consumes 99% of cpu even though no spreadsheet/document open

This is not strictly a spreadsheet problem but could not find a relevant
component.
My platform is as follows:
IBM Thinkpad R32
256MB RAM
XP Version 5.1 Service Pack 2

Intermittently but frequently and without a discernable pattern to events, the
OOo 2.1 soffice.bin process will continue to consume 99% of the cpu even though
there may not even be a document/spreadsheet open/active. This seems to occur
if OOo has been used at some point to open and close a spreadsheet/document.
The only way it appears to recover from this is to use the task manager to kill
the soffice.bin process as neither closing down the OOo quickstarter
OpenOffice.org seems to release the cpu.
