I wonder if it makes sense to keep this RFE. As understandable it is - so
unlikely is it that it will ever become implemented.
Saving a document in the background while still allowing to edit it means that
the whole document needs to be copied in memory before. As we don't have any
infrastructure for that I don't see any reasonable way to implement that.
What we currently have is that while a document is saved it should basically
possible to work on others. I'm not sure how good that works at the moment but
that is all I see doable.
So if the claim still is to allow editing of a document that is currently saved:
this is a clear "wontfix" for me.
