Marking anything else than the "Save"-icon is a great waste of everything.

1.) Instead of looking at the "Save"-icon, the user has to look now at two
distinct locations
 - it can't be worst than the status bar:
the user checks the status bar, then has to travel
*one full screen height* to click the "Save"-icon
 - even a mark in the window title is suboptimal,
because the user has still to look somewhere else,
find this location and interpret it (e.g. the asterisk)

2.) user needs to interpret yet a new bit of information
 - "grayed"-out icon is simply impossible to click
 - but some other mark (e.g. asterisk) is a new information
and user needs to be aware of it and always interpret it
[especially in a complex environment this is not trivial]

So, instead of paying attention to his work, the user will bother to click the
"Save"-button over and over again. [No, most users won't bother IF the document
is changed; it is too complex to figure it out in a short time span.]
