"Do you see any use case, where it would be wise to keep the formatting?"

Yes, many! :)

I could resume the concept of Style/hard formatting with an rule/exception
metaphor: "the rule is the style, the hard formatting the exception. Change the
rule, the exception remains"

(Well not a sooo good metaphor but replace rule/exception with table/flowerpot
and it works better ;))))

- Set 5 words i bold 6 in italic in your "Lorem ipsum" (with Default style).
- Now apply a style with a different font, indent, font size, whatever.
-> for sure you don't want your "highlighted" (bold/italic) words to loose their
attributes.

The problem we have here is that *a whole* paragraph is hard formatted.
So the "rule" applies in the background but the "exception" overrules the whole
"rule".

OOo cannot (and doesn't want to) decide between useful and useless hard
formatting

--------
To your question in between: "How do I create this kind of "hard-formatting""

- new document
- insert our "Lorum ipsum", our dummy text (type "dt" then press F3)
- do this again to create a second paragraph
- select the first paragraph from "He heard" to the last "?"
- set font to Arial (over the font list box)
- do the same in the second paragraph but choose "Courrier New"
-> Now para 1 is Arial and para 2 Courrier New, both hard formatted.
-> The Default style is style set to "Times New Roman"
- Set the cursor in the second paragraph
- do Update Style in the Style panel
-> para 1 is still Arial
-> para 2 is still Courrier New
-> but the default style is now also "Courrier New"
