I started work on minimal (text only) clipboard support. Currently the
work is just one commit
on a beoran-446-support-clipboard branch, here:

There is an example program and it works now under Linux, but needs
ports to all other platforms
and documentation. I definitely will need help with the ports, and I
also would like some feedback on the API.
Now, it's basically an "allegroized" crib from SDL2 2.0.0, but is that OK?
