Jay, you're probably going to kill me but I've had the best success in rooting P. pinifolius, specifically cuttings from seedlings of your "Magdalena Sunshine". At least I believe you introduced "Magdalena Sunshine". Unfortunately I can't tell you what I did to root them other than I used pure pumice. Can't remember the time of year or if I said any magical incantation over the cuttings. I'm pretty sure I rooted them outside or in my greenhouse (depending on the time of year). You are correct, I did introduce P. 'Magdalena Sunshine' and that was the one that I was thinking of when I wrote my message. I don't spend much time trying to root the regular vermillion colored form, but I do save any pieces that happen to come off the plant with a root attached! It's nice to know that you use pumice for the cutting mix. If you recall the time of year that you took your cuttings, it would be nice to know. I believe your greenhouse is somewhat shaded, so I think that would help in the propogating process. I wrote an article about finding this clone for the NARGS Rock Garden Quarterly, but I don't recall which issue that appeared in. I regularily donate seed of P. 'Magdalena Sunshine' to the American Penstemon Society's seed exchange. About 2/3 of the seedlings grown from that seed will produce plants with yellow flowers. Of course these should be known as ex. P 'Magdalena Sunshine' rather than the clonal name.
