/Clematis hirsutissima/ would qualify. It is not frequent in the Plains,
but has been documented here in some places. We use the Flora of the
Great Plains as our reference, at least until Flora of North America is
completed. I do know where a native occurrence of an infrequent Clematis
is to be found, I will check whether it keys out as /hirsutissima/, and
can collect seeds sometime.
It would be very interesting for people to read about your
experiences with it.
The Flora of the Great Plains actually includes plants not native to the
Plains, as the authors had to include entire states, rather than using
the actual boundaries of the Plains, which do not include all of any
state. Sometimes we check the index which shows county occurences more
carefully, so as to focus on plants of the Plains proper, rather than
add to the muddy comprehension of the difference between the Plains and
the Prairies to our east.
