Those of you who know me also know that I really get into
these plant names. I couldn’t resist this one: it’s a chance to kill several
birds with one stone.
Larry, you might be surprised to learn that Picea abies
began life as Pinus abies. It did not become Picea abies until almost a century
after Linnaeus named it Pinus abies.
You might also be surprised to learn that both picea and
abies are three syllable words, in each case the stress is on the first
syllable. If you travel in the same sort of circles I do, that's contrary, no
doubt, to what you’ve probably been hearing all your life.
