Oh yes, you're right. I had that problem of the synthetizer eating notes too! I'm 
writing a sequencer
program, and I thought the problem was mine for a while. That was a real pain :)
Well.. all we can do for now is to hope that when alsa goes kernel mainstream, by then 
the the development
should be much more user-oriented and less api-defining.
