Because I needed a /nice/ soundcard that made me happy under Windows and Linux and is relatively affordable... the Audiophile 2496 seemed to be the best compromise of all those criteria. I did the research beforehand, and heard good reports by people using ALSA with this card. However, I'd not heard of this SMP-conflict until today. Anyway, without SMP support in the kernel, things seem to be going smoothly so far, but like Ryan said, this is an unsatisfactory solution. However, under Windows, it's been just fantastic.
