ISTR someone saying that some of the high-end cards don't actually have an on-board mixer. Have you tried using the tvmixer module from the bttv package? (Assuming, of course, that you're using a bt8x8 card) Down the very bottom of the OSS modules is an entry for "bt848 mixer device" - enable this and "modprobe tvmixer debug=1 devnr=1" - this will give you a seperate mixer device for the TV card which you can play with. (It also has bass and treble controls, which are handy.)
