ISTR someone saying that some of the high-end cards don't actually have
an on-board mixer.  I can't remember which ones though - I suspect it
was the Hammerfalls. :/

Have you tried using the tvmixer module from the bttv package? 
(Assuming, of course, that you're using a bt8x8 card)  Down the
very bottom of the OSS modules is an entry for "bt848 mixer device" -
enable this and "modprobe tvmixer debug=1 devnr=1" - this will give you
a seperate mixer device for the TV card which you can play with.
(It also has bass and treble controls, which are handy.)

You might also want to investigate the btaudio module...#
