SYSTEM:
Linux Red Hat 8.0 (original kernel 2.4.18) on a D815EEA board with integrated
audio, Creative ES1373.
After I upgraded the kernel to 2.4.19, the system works OK and I decided to
install ANSA Driver 0.5.12a, Lib 0.5.10b, Utils 0.5.10. The installation went
OK too.

SYMPTOMS:
 'alsactl': "No soundcards found..."
'amixer': "The ALSA sound driver was not detected in this system"
'alsamixer': "failed to open mixer #0/#0: no such file or directory"
Missing (never installed?): '/etc/asound.conf' and '/etc/alsa.d/'

SUSPECTED PROBLEM: 'soundcore' does not install:
'insmod soundcore': "couldn't find the kernel version the module was
compiled for"

COMMENTS:
On the kernel, 2.4.16 I had prior to RH 8.0 installation, 'soundcore' was
required by es1371 module and came up fine. According to the
new '/lib/modules/2.4.19/modules.dep', 'soundcore' is no longer needed.
According to '/usr/src/linux-2.4.19/Documentation/Configure.help', 'soundcore'
_is_ required and will be used if CONFIG_SOUND=y and CONFIG_SOUND_ES1371=m.
Adding to the problem is that even if you somehow kludge 'soundcore'
in 'modules.dep', a command 'depmod -a' returns "Unresolved symbols in
soundcore.o".
The end result is it appears 'soundcore' is messed up in 2.4.19 (and future)
which is at odds with ALSA's main requirement that 'soundcore' is present (and
functional).

I don't know if the problem 'soundcore' is the cause of the SYMPTOMS above or
just in addition to. Or maybe I'm missing something on kernel compilation ...
(however, the whole compilation process works without a hitch)
Please help.

Thanks,
-- Alex
