So far, the only difference from you is: I have a SB 16 VibraX (PnP), PnP in the kernel and the stock modules from Debian (0.9beta12). Outside the assignation with amixer of the 16 bits DMA to Capture (you probably are not concerned), it works, with only some sound delay when playing quakeforge.

The OSS sb module woks fine for me, does it for you ? I suspect that today there is feable support in ALSA for these old card/chips. I have worst problems with a cmi8330 card (works in 0.5, not in 0.9). I wish the project tackles this (we have these cards, so we can contribute), or dump the drivers for them.
