You're correct about the ac'97 codec 
Here's the information you asked about... 
(i have to transcribe it from the machine at the moment 
so i'm only including the interesting bits - i hope i don't miss something
you need)

the sound stuff is built in on a dell latitude d600 motherboard

alsa version: 0.9.7 
(in kernel.2.6.0-test6 - 
i replaced the contents of sound/pci/ac97 with cvs from 10/17)

codec: ac'97
controller: Intel Corp. 82801DB AC'97 audio 
/proc/asound/card0/ac97\#0: SigmaTel STAC9750/51
Capabilities:           -headphone out-
Extended status:        codec=0 rev=1 AMAP DSA=0 SPDIF VRA

from lspci
00:1f.5 Class 0401: 8086:24c5 (rev 01)

...
