It's a result of several changes to the AC'97 specification; the
master control affects only those outputs already present in earlier
revisions. And the line output and headphone output jacks got swapped
at some point. Or not, depending on the codec.

I don't know anything about the STAC9750.

It isn't possible to let the master control affect the headphone
output if the hardware doesn't support this, but it may be possible to
rename the mixer control.
