Just a wild guess, but what does /dev/snd look like? Is it just a file
or a directory? You probably need to create the correct devices for the
new ALSA included in the kernel sources.

I also did an upgrade to kernel 2.6.4 and KDE 3.2.1 (on SuSE 9.0
though). Was quite some hassle and it only worked after I disabled the
KDE sound daemon (artsd) and stopped all KDE mixer applications (kmix
and kamix).
