Sorry for chiming in late, but I'd like to see what people think of the following list. It would be kind of nice to know if anyone from our group is going to any of these conferences so we could say hi, or whatever.
* Code Mash - but I just looked, it's sold out, and it's in like 2 weeks. x * The O'Reilly Strata conference <http://strataconf.com/strata2011>: it's about working with big data. I think this is kind of a wild card. I suspect most of the people there would be java and hadoop people, but it's definitely a direction our business is heading. I would go, but I don't think our team or my career will be that deeply involved in big data for a little while. It's definitely something I am very interested in personally, though. * Mix 11 <http://www.microsoft.com/events/mix/>: It seems to be one of the better microsoft conferences. It's in Vegas! * Strange Loop <http://thestrangeloop.com/>: One of my co-workers (Justin) went this year. I really wish I would have gone, but I had just started working at Milliman a couple of weeks before so it would have been pretty tight. This is also a little bit more of a wild card conference. * QCon <http://qconsf.com/>: I went two years ago and really got a lot out of it. They haven't announced a date for their SF 2011 conference, but I think it's usually in November. * One of those conferences in Norway<http://www.ndc2011.no/index.aspx?cat=165616&id=165617> or Malmo <http://oredev.org/2010>. Those look like they are really good. I know how to travel cheap - I bet I could get from here to Norway and back cheaper than someone else going to Portland. * One of the classic conferences: an OOPSLA, a big Agile conference. I don't know that I would get more out of this than I do watching their videos or reading whitepapers, though. I am more interested in meeting people at conferences. * Already mentioned local events: Open Agile NW, Portland / Seattle / Boise code camps, ALT.NET Seattle, etc. I will go to as many of these as I can. Notice I said "wildcard" in some of my descriptions: I think these are the best conferences to go to. You get more engaged, learn a lot more, and make bigger changes in your thinking at conferences that push back than going to talk about something you already know a lot about. A lot of the conferences above post videos on line. I would definitely watch some before committing, to make sure I knew what I was in for. Other than that, I've got nothing. I usually have more information on this kind of stuff, and I feel kind of weird. Any one else have any other big conferences they are looking at? --c On Wed, Jan 5, 2011 at 10:26, Adron Hall <[email protected]> wrote: > btw - Whenever planning around code camps start & if anyone is interested - > I'm absolutely up for teaming up for the trip to Portland Code Camp, Boise > Code Camp, and also QCon. > > Ping me @ [email protected] if anyone is up for getting a thread/list > started of who's interested. > > Adron Hall > > > On Wed, Jan 5, 2011 at 9:16 AM, Eric Ridgeway <[email protected]> wrote: > >> Gunna try and hit up the code camps this year as well ...
