BTW OOPSLA was combined with another ACM conference last year and is now 
SPLASH:

It is in Portland this year so travel is easy. Three other conferences 
are co-resident.

Academic conferences are quite unique in terms of some pretty far out stuff 
and graduate students. Also the tutorials are pretty cheap and advanced. The 
workshops are also cool though you have to submit a position paper for entry 
usually.

Designfest where you split into teams and work on a design for something is 
quite fun. We did medical records in 2009.
