Does *this*<http://haacked.com/archive/2006/08/08/Log4NetAndExternalConfigurationFileInASP.NET2.0.aspx>sound like your problem? I'm not trying to defend log4net, and I've heard/read the same things about nLog, but I know how much it bugs me when I can't figure out *why* something doesn't work, even if/when I've worked around or moved on...
