apt is telling you that it cannot find freetts, a dependency of altos , and
that's because there isn't a prebuilt *buntu package. This I know because:

I search launchpad.net for such *buntu questions. Here's the relevant info;

< https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/freetts/1.2.2-3 >
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/freetts/1.2.2-3

I have had no problems using the pre-built altos packages on ubuntu 10.10
btw, so an audio problem should be related to not having freetts installed.
I have freetts installed, so I am pretty sure I did it by either using
deb-buildpackage on the files you will find either at git.gag.com OR at the
link above. (I might have also found a debian pre-built package (which
should work because it is a java package...)

I also have had no problems (to date) building the stuff from source,
including the mac and microsoft platform stuff on the ubuntu box. Again I
have freetts (and the other deps) installed.

<https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/freetts/1.2.2-3>P.S... Join us on the
irc, if you can, and I can paste up the relevant deb-packagebuild stuff if
that will help. (It's not at all obvious !)
